With the summer months vastly approaching us, many people will be leaving their homes or apartments behind, seeking out fun vacations! However, with these fun summer vacations comes anxiety about leaving your home unattended, raising the question of what to do about your mail. Whether you are going away for a long weekend, one week, or a month, you don’t want your mail to pile up. As unattended mail is a sign to home intruders that your house is unoccupied as well as possible lost mail due to a full mailbox. That is why the expert security team here at Basco Security has compiled a list of our top tips on what to do about your mail services during your vacation, allowing you to fully enjoy your vacation without worry.

What Should I Do About My Mail While I Am On Vacation?

Put Your Mail On Pause

If you are going out of town for an extended period of time, go to your local USPS center and place a hold on your mail. USPS offers a hold mail service that can hold your mail safely at your local USPS post office facility until you return. This service is offered for up to 30 days, no longer. To make this request visit your local office up to 30 days in advance or as early as the next scheduled delivery day. To take part in this service, you will need to create a USPS account and verify your identity. Once this is done you will be able to rest assured knowing your mail is safe.

Forward Your Mail

If you know you are going to be out of town for longer than 30 days, it is best to forward your mail to another address. USPS offers a forwarding service that allows you to forward all of your mail from one address to a temporary address. However, this only applies to domestic addresses.

Ask A Trusted Neighbor To Collect Your Mail

If you know you will be returning to your home address within a week or so, ask a trusted neighbor to periodically check your mailbox. If there is any mail, have them grab it and keep it safely in their home. That way you are able to collect it as soon as you get back from your trip! We recommend that you only ask a trusted neighbor or family friend to do so as you want to make sure your mail is going to someone you know well.

Don’t Order Any Online Goods

Stop your online shopping a week or so before you head out on your trip to ensure any packages will not be arriving without you there. If you were to order an item you would be allowing your home to be vulnerable to package theft.
